Police in Mzuzu are keeping on remand seven robbers including two police officers in connection with robbery and violence that has been taking place in the city for the past two months.
‘For the past two months, robbers armed with pangas have been causing havoc by terrorizing residents in Mzuzu city, moving in a group of seven, they attacked business men at Kaning’ina and broke into two offices at Luwinga industrial site among others.”
Mzuzu Police Public Relation Officer Martin Bwanali also said during the nights of 02 -03 June 2016 the robbers attacked Safrintra Steel Malawi Ltd at Luwinga, but were intercepted by Police patrol team and they escaped:
“the nights of 03-04 June 2016, the robbers broke into the office of Northern Region Water Board at Luwinga Township after beating and tying up the watchmen they stole K260, 000 cash belonging to Kawiruwiru SACCO and also snatched three cell phones from the watchmen valued at K30, 000.
“and on the nights of 04-05 June 2016, police we were alerted that the robbers were attacking a business man Asafag Rashid at Kaning’ina. We rushed to the scene and managed to arrest the driver and another man who was using Suzuki registration number MJ 485.”
All the seven suspects are remanded at Mzuzu Prison and will appear in court soon to answer charges of robbery with violence contrary to section 300 of the penal code.
The robbers have been identified as Blessings Phiri (driver) aged 35 of Mgolozera village T/A Mkumbira in Nkhatabay district, Laston Balala aged 21 of Chitera village T/A Chitera in Chiradzulo district, Isaac Phiri aged 32 of Chionjeka Village TA Khombeza in Salima District, Andrew Banda aged 28 of Kapalamula village TA Kachindamoto in Dedza district and Yusuf Simute aged 32 of Msusa village T/A Malemia in Zomba district.
The two polices are Sgt. Misheck Makweza aged 30 of Mtopi village T/A Nkalo in Chiradzulo district and Constable Wyck Njolomole aged 28 of Njolomole village T/ANjolomole in Ntcheu District.
