The court sitting in Nkhata Bay has slapped Kenneth Chinomba, 25, with a 12 year jail sentence after finding him guilty for defiling a 4 year old girl.
The district’s police publist, Ignatius Esau said that on March 20, 2017, Chinomba defiled the little girl inside his house and later offered her roasted maize inorder to keep her mouth shut.
“The issue came to light after the victim was spotted having difficulties when urinating and answering call of nature. She was taken to Chombe health centre for medical examination which proved that she was defiled”, said Esau.
Chinomba was arrested and charged with the offence of defilement contrary to section 138 of the penal code and he pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance.
“Three witnesses were paraded by the state and on June 1, 2017, he was found guilty”, said Esau.
During mitigations, the convict prayed for leniency since he alledged that he was taking care of his family. But first grade magistrate Anthony Banda when passing sentence concured with state prosecutor Sergeant Keston Chiona’s submission that the convict deserved longer custodial sentence bearing in mind the age of the victim.
Magistrate Banda also said the trauma the victim incurred during the process would be felt by her for the rest of her life thereby affecting the victim’s school process and at this point, he ordered the convict to spend the next 12yrs in jail with effect from the date of his arrest.
The convict hails from Songwe village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mabuka in Mulanje district.
