The Karonga First Grade Magistrate Court on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 convicted and sentenced 27 Ethiopians to pay K20000 fine each for entering into Malawi illegally and also forfeited a 5 tonner Fuso Fighter to Malawi government for illegally using it for transportation of illegal immigrants .

The court heard that on June 26, 2017 Karonga Police arrested illegal immigrants from Ethiopia at Katiri area in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu in the district.

“The immigrants used a vehicle registration number TO5846, Fuso Fighter ,5 tonner. The driver of the vehicle run away into a nearby bush leaving the vehicle. The 27 Ethipians nationals were then arrested”, said George Mulewa, Karonga Police Publist.

Police prosecutor Sub Inspector Kelvin Kamanga told the court that although the convicts being first offenders, they cause threats to the country since no body knows what they did in their country. He further added that these people used unchartered routes to enter into Malawi knowing that it is illegal.

Kamanga therefore pleaded to the court to impose meaningful sentence to the convicts and also forfeit the vehicle they were using as per section 141 of Police Procedure and Evidence code to deter-others would be offenders.

In mitigations the convicts described themselves as first offenders and asked the court’s forgiveness. They also told the court that they have not eaten any food for six months.

Delivering his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Chakaka Nyirenda concurred with the state that illegal entry brings threats to the country hence they use unchartered routes without permits.

Magistrate Nyirenda therefore ordered all 27 convicts to pay K20000 fine each and forfeited the vehicle they used to Malawi government.

Mishama Wariana and his 26 friends are between the age of 25-35 years and the TO 5846 Fuso fighter vehicle indicates the details of Mr Amedi Hassan Abub, Box 16, Dowa.
