Police in the boardering district of Mchinji arrested 34 Congolese for crossing Malawi borders illegally on Tuesday, 20 September 2016.
According to one of the illegal immigrants confessed to the Police that they have used unchartered routes to cross the boundaries since they have no proper documents.
Mchinji Police Publist Inspector Kaitano Lubrino confided with News Watch Reviews saying that their intentions hit a snag after receiving a tip off from people in the district.
“Their intentions hit a snag after Police officers managing Mwami Boarder tactfully acted on tip-off from a well wisher who informed them of the development”, said Kaitano.
“This prompted the police to institute a manhunt who in the process found them harbouring in a house of a Malawian woman within Kaombe village in area of Traditional Authority Mlonyeni in the district”, said Inspector Kaitano.
Reports have indicated that these Congolese disembarked from a container truck and it is alleged that a Zambian bicycle tax operator ferried them into Malawi before the police arrested them.
These immigrants have expressed worry over unbearable conditions in their homeland, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), hence seeking refuge in Malawi.
Meanwhile, all the foreigners have been handed over to the immigration department to proceed with deportation process if necessary.
Out of these 34 immigrants , 16 are children while 10 are women and 8 are men.
