Malawi Police in Kasungu district have launched investigations into the incident where a suspected thief was killed by an angry mob.
A man whose particulars are not known was on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 beaten severely by angry mob after being caught red handed stealing from the shop belonging to Mr. Denis Mtafwa which is behind National Bank near Kasungu Bus Depot.
In an interview with News Watch Reviews, Kasungu Police deputy relations officer Harry Namwaza said that on the material day the deceased went to Mr Mtafwa’s shop in pretence of being the customer.
“When he entered into the shop, the deceased stole a trouser thinking that the owner had not seen him. Upon seeing that the suspect was leaving without paying, Mtafwa shouted for help to apprehend the deceased. This attracted a group of people around the area who apprehended him and started beating him severely”, said Namwaza.
Upon seeing that the situation was getting out of hand, Mr Mtafwa phoned the police who rushed to the scene to rescue the deceased but unfortunately he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
No one has been arrested yet in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, Police are urging the general public not to take the law into their hands but should report the matter to the authorities so that such matters should be dealt with accordingly.
