After giving Manchester City a heavy defeat two weeks ago in the Champions league group stage match in Spain, Pep Guardiola’s men fought back at Ettihad and hammered a humiliating 3-1 on Barcelona.
Manchester City were the first to concede in the 21st minute of the Tuesday’s encounter through Barca’s prolific talisman Lionel Messi with a stunning breakaway goal.
But Man City reversed the game and mounted pressure on the Catalan side and their efforts paid off with a stunning equalising goal from IIkay Gundogan in the 39th minute after receiving a superb pass from Raheem Sterling.
Kelvin De Bruyne added his name on the score sheet early in the second half with a curled free kick which left Barcelona goalkeeper flying helplessly.
The Spanish giants failed to contain the intensity of Man City and their hopes were doomed in the 74th minute when Gundogan struck again his second and third for Man City.
After the game, Pep Guardiola praised his team for a good performance at home.
“When one club like Manchester City is 25 years without being in Europe, you dont have a history. History means when you face the big teams, you have the consistency to fight face to face.”, said Guardiola.
“I am happy with the spirit my team has shown during the second leg, I hope this is just the beggining, we will maintain this form until the end”, concluded Pep.
Man City is on second position in their group, two points behind Barcelona who lead the group with nine points.
