The National Freedom Party may not be able to contest the August 3 municipal elections after it missed the Independent Electoral Commission’s payment deadline.

News24 understands that National Executive Committee led by Maliyakhe Shelembe, Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa and Xolani Ndlovu were responsible for the election campaign and making the payment.

A reliable source alleged the cheque sent to the IEC bounced.

The source said he was not sure how much money was eventually deposited but that for KZN, the party needed to have paid R90 000.

He said the party did not meet the payment deadlines of the IEC on June 2, and was waiting for the court to decide whether the party could contest in the local government elections.

“We have been receiving funding but we never know where the money is going. We have been receiving information that busses and service providers have not been paid, we are in trouble,” he said.

Provincial spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu confirmed that the party was facing a few challenges.

“It is true, the matter is still pending. We are waiting to hear what the IEC court will decide,” said Sigudu.

He would not be drawn to further comment on the matter, or allegations that the initial cheque sent, bounced.

IEC’s provincial chairperson Mawethu Mosery would only confirm that the NFP missed the payment deadline.
