Malawi is on fire. Few days after the Lilongwe market was burnt into ashes, on Wednesday it was the Ekwendeni University of Livingstonia which was gutted down causing damages worth millions.
The Ekwendeni University of Livingstonia Campus caught fire on September 28, 2016 at around 1000hrs.
According to Mzuzu Police deputy publist, Cecilia Mfune said the campus Registrar Rev Mwakasungula reported the incident to the Police.
“Fire started from Matron Office where unknown number of mattress were also kept. It is believed electric sparks from the main switch caught the mattress and eventually spread the fire to the computer room where several chairs and tables got burned”, said Cecilia.
The Northern region Police said 40 Computers were retrieved safely.
“Some computers were retrieved. But there was chaos at the site when Fire brigade who came to extinguish the fires were hampered by students who were stoning them. This situation made them to return to their base”, said Cecilia.
The value of the damaged items is still not known as the government is still accessing it. No one has been reported injured.
