In a quest to end crimes of fraud and earning money through tricks, Malawi police in Dowa are keeping in custody a 29 years old man for Pretending to tell fortunes contrary to section 325 of the penal code.
Dowa Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Richard Kaponda identified the traditional doctor as Filudi Smock of Kachepatsonga village in the area of Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa district.
According to Sergeant Richard Kaponda, he said the traditional doctor tricked Cheyo family from Kaluzi village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in the same district that he can bring back to life their daughter Ester Cheyo aged 17 years who died in March this year after suffering from general body pains.
The doctor told the mother of the deacesed that he wants K410,000.00 for the job to be done. But after doing what he knows, it surprised them that the woman was not raised from the dead. This prompted the mother of the deceased to report the matter to Dowa police.
The Malawi Police launched a manhunt and the suspect was arrested at Mponela Trading centre where he was performing his usual tricky stuff.
This incident comes barely two months after another family was duped in the northern district of Malawi, Nkhata Bay. The trickster promised the family that he will raise their daughter who died in December last year. He ordered the mother of the deceased daughter to pay them K500 000 and a goat. But he failed to bring her back to life, instead he absconded.
