THE Church should pray and give guidance to political parties to avoid slander that has characterised this year’s campaigns ahead of the August 11 general elections, Vice President Inonge Wina has said.

Ms Wina said Zambia was not only a Christian nation in which all churches were considered part of one family, but a nation that was receptive and tolerated of all religions that similarly promoted the principles of peaceful co-existence.

Speaking during the Men’s Fellowship and Trustees Fundraising Worship Service at Lusaka’s Chilenje African Methodist Episcopal Church yesterday, Ms. Wina urged political parties to exercise tolerance and respect for divergent views.

She said Zambians must endeavour to maintain peace and love for one another.

“The Bible teaches us to love our neighbour which is in essence directing all of us to live in peace with each other. One moral appeal to everyone is to exercise tolerance and respect for each other’s views,” she said.

She said the African Methodist Episcopal church (AME) had a unique history in that it was the first major religious denomination in the western world that had its origins over sociological rather than theological beliefs and differences.
