Police in the lakeshore district of Malawi, Nkhata Bay, have arrested a 26 year old man identified as Steka Mtambalika who was on the run on allegations that he assaulted a 12 year old boy Junior Banda and died two days later.
Nkhata Bay Police Publist, Ignatius Esau told this publication that the suspect was arrested in Rumphi where he fled to after the incident.
“We can confirm to you that the suspect who was on the run has been arrested after an intensive manhunt which was carried out by the Police. He has since been taken to Nkhata Bay police station where after paperwork is expected to appear in court to answer a charge of murder which contravenes section 209 of the penal code”, said Esau.
According to the police, the suspect was rearing six wild ducks in a kraal and on May 22, 2017, Junior Banda set them free by opening the kraal and they disappeared into the bush.
The development did not please the suspect and as a punishment, he whipped Junior with a tree log and later twisted his neck.
Ignatius further said that Junior was rushed to Mpamba health centre where he was treated as an out patient but two days later, his condition became worse and was reffered to Nkhata Bay district hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
An autopsy showed that death was due to injuries to the spine.
Both the suspect and the deceased hails from Kahomwa village in the area of Traditional Authority ( TA ) Timbiri in the distirict.
