Have you ever heard about the word “Lake of Stars?”. If this word doesn’t ring a bell in your head, then this is your chance to know it. The Lake of Stars describes the beautiful lake which is in Malawi, “Lake Malawi “, formerly known as Lake Nyasa.
Along the lake, there are lots of beaches , lodges, hostels and backpackers which provide affordable accommodation for tourists.
But for today, I will not share with you about the beaches found along this beautiful lake, but I would rather give you a glimpse of what we have in this Lake, which is a beautiful Island known as “Likoma Island”.
You might have visited so many Islands in the world, but you might also have missed another beautiful Island located in the waters of Lake Malawi.
The island has an overall area of 18 km², and is located in the north-eastern part of Lake Malawi.
The island’s main mode of transportation is provided by the MV Ilala steamer boat and MV Chilembwe which circumnavigates Lake Malawi. There are also smaller boats like MV Chambo and MV Malunji which networks Likoma and Chizumulu, Nkhata Bay and also between Likoma and Cobue in Mozambique. Both goods and people are transported through these routes.
As Likoma is a relevant tourist destination in Malawi, there are a few hotels, lodges and backpacker hostels, usually based on ecotouristic principles. The waters around Likoma are appreciated for snorkelling and diving.
The interior of the island is mostly covered by grassland, with villages perched on steep cliffs, , with a large number of baobab trees which brings a superb attraction to tourists.
There are so many activities taking place on this famous Island that some visitors never leave the waters of the Lake. The shallow and clear waters for snorkeling from your bungalow or off the beaches anywhere around the island.
The Beaches on Likoma Island are one of the main attractions and are great for swimming, diving and surfing.
The beautiful view of Kaya Mawa and the southern coast of Likoma Island, Likoma is tropical paradise in which visitors can relax and find themselves forgetting where they came from.
If you have never visited this place, it is famous for its warm waters and extremely diverse marine life. The waters around the Island are teeming with different types of fish with different colours and sizes.
There are campsites and beach parks around the whole Island where you can pitch your tent and “really” be outdoors without any problem.
