Police in the Northern region of Malawi, Mzuzu, have launched a manhunt for a 22 year-old man identified as Anthony John for throwing his biological one year old boy into the river.
The boy’s body was found floating in Mchengautuwa river on Monday morning.
According to Mzuzu police relations officer, Martin Bwanali, said Police’s preliminary investigations points at the father to the child as the prime suspect.
Bwanali further said that the wife to the suspect told the police that her husband came home on July 20th 2016, around midnight while he was drunk. He then started assaulting his wife and his 3 year old stepson without apparent reason, his wife escaped and sought a refuge at their landlord.
The same night, the suspect took his one year old biological son, John Anthony, who is now the deceased and went out and he was heard saying he would sleep at his elder brother just within Chibavi location.
He did not return and only to find the child dead and the body floating in a river this morning.
According to the medical report, it states that the boy was just thrown into the river where he died and the postmortem conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital indicated that death was due to Asphyxia following drowning.
Further investigations are underway to arrest the suspect who will answer the charge of murder which is contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code.
The family has been in marriage for 2 years and the suspect, Anthony John, 22 years, was a Kabaza operator.
