By Elizabeth Elizalde:A Cincinnati man who brutally beat and starved his 2-year-old daughter was sentenced to death Monday.
Glen Bates, 34, was emotionless as he was sentenced by Hamilton County Judge Megan Shanahan, following the jury’s recommendation to put him to death.
Bates’ attorney said he wants to appeal the sentence, and had argued that Bates should instead get life in prison.
Bates in September was found guilty of aggravated murder in the killing of his daughter, Glenara Bates. The child’s mother, 30-year-old Andrea Bradley, was also charged with aggravated murder, and is expected to appear in court Tuesday for a possible plea hearing, ABC affiliate WCPO-TV reports.
But the jury believed Bates to be “the principal offender.” Glenara’s 10-year-old sister testified during trial and said she saw Bates take the toddler by the legs and flung her body against the wall, causing her to hit her head.
She added that she saw the toddler motionless with her eyes closed the next day.
Glenara was 13 pounds at the time of her death in March 2015.
Prosecutors argued that Glenara had bruises, belt and bite marks, and a large gash on her forehead sewn together by thread.
“This man is a murderer who needs to pay for what he did to this innocent baby,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a statement. “My heart breaks for this little girl. She died in one of the most horrific ways imaginable.”
Andrea Bradley’s other six children are in the custody of relatives or family services, authorities said.
