Barely a week after a man in Mzuzu was sentenced to 16 years for defilement, on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, another man in the city has been slapped a 14 year custodial sentence after being found guilty for sexually exploitating a 9-year old minor contrary to section 138(1) of the Penal Code.
The convict, Peter Phiri, 54, of Chingu village in the area of Traditional Authority Khongoni in Lilongwe and the father to the victim were neighbours at Kadekeshi area.
The court heard that the girl was on an erand from her father’s house to give a cooking stick (locally known as mthiko) to the convict and he found a chance to defile her.
State Prosecutor Sergeant Clara Msiska told the court that the convict was caught red handed in the act by another man who came to visit him.
Medical report obtained at Mzuzu Central Hospital indicated that the convict had defiled the minor.
Appearing in court, he pleaded guilty to the charge leveled against him.
His mitigations for a lenient sentence were not entertained by the state which described the convict’s behaviour not only exploitive but also traumatising.
Presiding First Grade Magistrate Sophie Chimaliro then sentenced the convict to 14 years Iprisonment with Hard Labour saying such people have no space in the modern world.
