Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari will be visiting Ogoniland, in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, on Thursday, government sources say. The visit, is to flag off the much delayed clean up of Ogoniland, as recommended by the UNEP report.
The visit to Ogoni will be the president’s first visit to the oil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, and comes at the back of series of threats by Niger Delta Avengers. The Niger Delta Avengers have recently blown up several oil pipelines in the region in a bid to truncate oil production, which is the mainstay of the country’s economy. Series of local and international observers have expressed their belief that the government will need to liaise with the people, to find out the real reason behind their agitations, and resolve it.
There have been reports of the government terminating contracts for pipeline protection previously held by militant leaders, and early this week, it was reported that the Federal Government was deploying five warships and 100 gunboats to the region– a move that many see as being tantamount to bringing a sledge hammer to a knife-fight.
