Portugal spoiled the party in France on Sunday after beating the host nation 1-0 in a thrilling encounter at Stade De France in Paris. This was their first extra-ordinary triumph against France in 41 years.
Portugal who went into final aginst France as underdogs after their first three matches in the group stages ended up in draws. Nothing much was expected from Santo’s team.
There were tears of sadness on the face of their prolific Madrid superstar Christiano Ronaldo who was substituted in the first through an injury after a heavy tackle from Payet. But at the end of the game Portugal became the last standing team and tears of sadness on Ronaldo’s face turned into tears of joy.
Dedpite losing their captain, Portugal clung on until the last whistle.
The two teams failed to break the deadlock in the regulation time and the game was taken to extra time. As the teams and supporters from both sides were expecting that the final will be decided through post match penalties, the Portuguese striker who came in for Ronaldo, Eder, silenced the home supporters after his thunderbolt strike from 20 meters went straight into the bottom corner of the goal leaving Lloris catching the air.
France had chances through the tournament’s top goal scorer Antoine Griezman, Payet and Sissoko but they failed to capitalise them. On this final day, Griezman was kept quite by Pepe who was on the best form taking control of the backline.
Fernando Santo’s team broke the record of clinching their first tittle in their football history and even denying France from winning the third successive tournament as hosts.
Portugal went into the game looking for the first win against portugal after losing ten successive games and their dreams were awarded with a precious and most important acollade, the European trophy.
This is the greatest moment in the history of Portugal clinching the trophy outside their country. Twelve years ago, the Portuguese team were the hosts and they lost to Greece in the final.
After the game Santos, the Portuguese coach said despite losing their talismanic captain, they still had hope that they can make it.
“It was sad to see our captain being carried of the pitch, some thought that was the end of Portugal, but no, we showed them we can do it, our fans were behind us”, said Santos
With the trophy in their possession, Ronaldo joined Michel Platin as the joint top scorer in European Championship history and he is also a the first player to score in four seperate Euros. He has also added another benchmark for appearing at EURO finals 21times.
