By Jeni Evans: The man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s baby girl appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for his case to be postponed for a bail application.

“He must never get out,” baby Asheeka’s grandmother Farieda Scott said after Peter van Tonder was taken back into custody.

“You should have seen her afterwards. Her lips were burnt,” said Scott, her lips quivering.

The last time she saw her granddaughter was on Saturday, September 3, after bath time at her home in Delft, Cape Town.

Van Tonder came to collect Asheeka to take her to the child’s mother Shakiera. Although she wasn’t comfortable with it, she did not want to question the couple.

“I wasn’t happy, but who am I to say something? They are adults,” Scott said.

“She came back hysterical to say something is wrong with the child.”

Asheeka was taken for medical care. By Sunday, doctors told the family she was showing no brain activity.

“It was heartbreaking to see how that child looked.”

Asheeka was born premature and died at 16 months, just as she was learning to walk, her grandmother said. She described her as a very friendly child.

Earlier, Legal Aid attorney Robyn Diedericks conferred in hushed tones with Van Tonder. The court noted that he was receiving medical care in Goodwood prison.

The case could be transferred to the High Court for trial. The matter was postponed to 20 October for a formal bail application.

Van Tonder claimed to have been beaten while in jail, but this was not raised during his appearance.
