By Lavan Pijoos: A Springs schoolboy was found stabbed to death near a railway line on Friday morning, Johannesburg police said.

His body was found at 07:00, after he did not return home from cricket practice on Thursday.

“His father tried to phone him but his phone went straight to voicemail, and started searching throughout the night and wanted to report the matter in the morning to police,” police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said.

He was a pupil at Veritas College in Springs, east of Johannesburg, and was 17-years-old.

“At about 07:00 a member of the community found a young man dressed in school uniform behind a pre-cast wall near the railway line [on the] c/o Davis and Rogers Road in Selection Park, Springs.

“He immediately phoned police. Another member of the community went directly to [the school] and informed them that there was one of their learners deceased.

“One of the school teachers identified the child and phoned the police. The boy was living in Dunnottar with his father.”

He had been stabbed in the chest.

The boy’s cellphone and cricket bag were missing.

A school official, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident, but said details were still sketchy.

Andre Snyman, from eBlockwatch, a community crime-fighting initiative, posted on Facebook that the boy would have been head boy of his school next year, but the school could not immediately confirm this.
