Despite police in Malawi issuing frequent warnings about taking the law into their own hands, this message has fallen into deaf ears of some community members in the country.
This follows an incident which took place in Mzimba when an angry mob took the law into their own hands and burnt alive a suspected thief who was identified by the police as Biko Mhlanga.
Confirming the incident, Mzimba Police spokesperson, Sergeant Peter Botha said the 34 year old man was suspected to have broken into a house of Mirriam Nyirenda and stole cash amounting to MK600 000.
“It is alledged that the suspect stole some money from one of the community members house and run away. He was then hunted by the villagers until he was apprehended and burnt with petrol”, said Botha.
The suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzimba District Hospital and no arrests have been made yet.
Biko Mhlanga hailed from Nkuluwayo village in area of Traditional Authority (TA) Inkosi Chindi in the district.
