Police in Kasungu have arrested a 37 year old man identified as Major Phiri of Malaza village, in the area of Traditional Authority Malanda in Nkhata Bay for soliciting money from people who their relatives died mysteriously claiming that he would bring them back to life.
Confirming the development to News Watch Reviews, Kasungu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Harry Namwaza said that the suspect in question came to Kasungu from Mchinji where he was plying his business as a herbalist.
“The suspect came from Mchinji where he is practicing his tricky business. He came to Chipanga Trading centre in Kasungu where he was invited by a relative of the deceased who died mysteriously to bring him back to life”, said Harry.
Upon hearing the arrival of the suspect in the district, the 50 year old woman whose son died in March this year felt relieved and approached the suspect to bring back to life her deceased son. The suspect demanded K500, 000 but the woman only managed to pay K129, 000 which the suspect received. After some days had passed, the woman realised that she had been tricked and she reported the matter to Kasungu Police who immediately arrested the suspect.
According to the police in Kasungu they say so far they have registered at least 8 complaints against the suspect in question and have launched a rigorous investigation on the matter.
Major Phiri will appear before court soon to answer the charge of Theft by Trick which is contrary to Section 271 of the Penal Code.
On the same matter, Police in Nkhata Bay have been hunting for the same suspect after duping a family in the district in February this year. He told the family that he can raise their daughter who died in December last year. After doing his tricky stuff in his home village, nothing happened and people discovered that he is a crook, this made him to disappear immediately.
