The Nkhatabay First Grade Magistrate court on September 1, 2016 sentenced two men to three years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for stealing a goat.
The court through police prosecutor Sub Inspector Ephraim Njewa heard that during the night of 23rd -24th of August 2016, the two Madalitso Banda 18 and Daniel Kaunda 31 stole a goat belonging to a 16 year old Miss Everlyn Chirwa.
The district’s police publist, Ignatius Esau said on August 24, 2016, the owner of the goat was surprised to see that one of her goats is missing in a kraal and this prompted her together with her relatives to start searching for it.
“It did not take long for them to find the culprits who were found selling its meet at Chintheche trading centre and they were arrested forthwith and were taken to Chintheche police where they were charged with the offence of theft of cattle which is contrary to section 281 of the penal code”, said Esau
The two pleaded guilty to the charge leveled against them and in mitigations, they asked for leniency as both convicts alleged to be orphans and also bread winners for their respective families.
But when passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Anthony Banda observed that cases of this nature are frequently committed in the district and as a measure to put a stop to it, he told the court that the two deserves a stiffer sentence.
He later ordered the two to spend the next three years in prison with effect from the date of their arrest.
