Zambia: Government regrets the death of five pupils and one teacher from Hillcret Technical Secondary school in a road traffic accident

GENERAL Education Minister John

Phiri has expressed regret on the

untimely death of five pupils and

one teacher from Hillcrest

Technical Secondary school in a

road traffic accident last night .

And Dr Phiri has conveyed his

condolences to the families of the

deceased and school management.

Ministry of general education

spokesperson Hillary Chipango in

a statement stated that Dr Phiri

said all funeral expenses will be

borne by the government and all

arrangements will be


“The Ministry of General Education

has since suspended the Coca

Cola sporting event that was

scheduled to start today in Monze

at Canicius Secondary school ,until

further notice,” Mr. Chipango


He named the deceased as

Hayungu Titus G9, Banda Gabriel

G12, Kaputa Mukumbi G11, Siame

Remmy G12, Robby Zulu G10 died

on the way to hospital and the

teacher is Sikaaswe Siyasiya.

“Those still in hospital are

Mukubesa Sitali G12, Bupe Mutale

G10, Wesly Kafunda G10, Bright

Bwalya G12, Albert Lungu G12,

Martin Mazumbo G12, Chiunda

Joseph G11 is in a critical

condition and evacuated to

Livingstone,” Mr. Chipango stated.

He stated that the Ministry has in

the past banned transportation of

pupils in lorries travelling in the


Meanwhile police assistant public

relations officer Esther Mwaata-

Katongo confirmed that six people

among them 5 pupils of Hilcrest

Technical School have died while

10 others sustained serious

injuries in an accident which

happened on Great North Road

near Kozo Lodge 5 KM South of


Mrs. Mwaata-Katongo stated that

the accident happened on June 17

2016 at about 22:00 hours. “Five

died on the spot while one who

was among the two that were

being evacuated to Livingston

General Hospital died on the way.

Involved was a mitsubishi Rosa

Registration number AJC 5110 , a

property of Hilcrest Technical

School driven by Joseph Kafwimbi

Mwape, 35 of highlands,

Livingstone which was heading to

Canisias Secondary School from

Livingstone for games,” Mrs.

Mwaata-Katongo stated.

“Also involved was a Daf truck

Registration number ABZ 8175 and

trailer number 8175T which was

stationed. The accident happened

when the driver of the Minibus was

overtaking a stationed truck in the

process hit into the same truck as

he tried to get back to his lane

upon seeing an oncoming motor

vehicle. Due to the impact, 6

passengers, of which 5 are pupils

and one Teacher died, 10 were

seriously injured and 9 are

admitted to Choma General

Hospital while one has been

evacuated to Livingstone General

Hospital.”Mrs. Mwaata-Katongo

stated that 20 were treated as out

patients and that the driver

escaped without injuries.

She stated that 5 bodies have

been deposited in Choma General

hospital mortuary while one is in

Livingstone General Hospital


Mrs. Mwaata-Katongo stated that

the driver had been charged with

causing death by dangerous
