THE Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed the state to prosecute a matter in which former permanent secretary of mines, energy and water development Charity Mwansa and director Charles Mulenga are charged with abuse of authority of office and theft involving the Trafigura oil deal.

Mwansa and Mulenga, who appeared before principal resident magistrate Mwaka Mikalile, were scheduled for mention when public prosecutor Samuel Zulu told the court that he was in possession of the consent to prosecute the matter from the National Prosecutions Office.

Mwansa, 63 and her co-accused are facing two counts of theft and abuse of authority of office in which they are alleged to have procured 24,626 cubic litres of petrol and 26,500 litres of diesel from Trafigura without adhering to the contract terms of payment.

The matter comes up for plea on August 16.
